Why should we maintain a K-12 monopoly controlled by politicians? How has any monopoly resulted in improved cost or quality?

  2. Attaching Race to the Top funding to entice, leaves me asking why? If the standards are so much better then leave it up to the schools/states to decide if they want to implement them for their schools. Let the standards speak for themselves. As a parent I ask things like will this help my child learn more and better? Will it be flexible enough for my kids with IEP's. Why is there a component of tracking the psychology of the choices my kids are making during the test? What will that do for them? I don't like it. Unless they can prove to me or show me the benefits for my kids, I stand opposed.

  3. Jenna, the way you, I, perhaps your children, but more certainly most of their contemporaries around the country are taught mathematics does not represent adequate preparation for professions requiring math and science competence. The Common Core State Standards, at least with respect to math, do represent adequate preparation. They elicit sense-making and development of practice rather than simple exposure to content. As a teacher, and for you as a parent, this can mean an uncomfortable transition, but in return for our willingness to adapt and innovate, our students will grow up with a more rigorous orientation towards problem solving in mathematics and beyond. Your child(ren) will be a better thinker and will have more opportunities if taught to meet these standards: http://www.corestandards.org/Math/Practice/
